Urgent Care Q & A

What is an eye emergency?

An eye emergency occurs any time you have a situation where your vision or eye health is in danger and needs urgent attention to preserve your sight. For example, you might get small objects in your eye, burns, chemical exposure, or blunt injuries to the eye or eyelid that may cause damage to your eyes or to the bones and tissue that surround and support your eyes. Any sudden problem with the eye or change in vision requires prompt medical attention.

Other conditions that need urgent eye care services include:

  • Retinal detachment
  • Pink eye or another eye infection
  • Acute glaucoma
  • Retinal artery occlusion
  • Other eye traumas

If you have an eye emergency, call Dr. Dean S. Steinberger, OD & Associates immediately.

What are the signs I need urgent care for my eyes?

In most cases, you’ll know if you sustain an eye injury. However, it’s possible for you to get a small object in your eye and not experience any symptoms immediately. Some of the signs of an eye emergency include:

  • If you experience sudden changes or loss of vision
  • If you have severe eye pain
  • Your eyes are swollen or you have inflammation around your eyes
  • You have red or pink eyes
  • You experience sudden flashing lights
  • You see a shower of “floaters”
  • Your pupils are differently sized

Retinal detachment and acute glaucoma can cause sudden, but painless vision loss. If your sight is affected, even if you don’t experience any pain, you should contact Dr. Dean S. Steinberger, O.D. & Associates for assistance.

What should I do if I’m having an eye emergency?

If you have an eye emergency or experience eye pain or irritation, resist the urge to rub your eyes. If you have a small object lodged in your eye, rubbing it could scratch your eye or push it deeper into your ocular cavity. If a large object has punctured your eye, do not remove it.

Call Dr. Dean S. Steinberger, O.D. & Associates to get personalized advice on how to care for your eye before you see the doctor. If you’ve suffered an eye trauma, they may advise that you apply an ice pack to your eye to reduce swelling or pain. If you splashed a chemical into your eye, they can give you instructions to ensure you flush your eye correctly. In an emergency, the doctors can meet you at the office to assess your eyes and provide treatment and additional advice.
