Cataracts Q & A

What are Cataracts?

A cataract occurs when the lens inside your eye becomes cloudy. Your vision becomes slightly distorted and blurry as if you’re looking through a dirty windshield. You might have trouble with your night vision, or telling the difference between the colors dark blue and black.

A common side effect of aging, cataracts affect both women and men, and typically occur around age 55. The likelihood of getting cataracts may increase if you smoke or spend a lot of time in the sun.

What are the symptoms of cataracts?

With cataracts, you’ll typically notice gradual changes in your vision. Your vision may become blurry, and you may notice other symptoms, including:

  • Double vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Needing more light to read
  • Trouble seeing well at night
  • Bright colors appear yellowish or faded

Not all cataracts will cause problems with your vision. Sometimes they cause only minor clouding.

How are cataracts diagnosed?

The optometrists at Dr. Dean S. Steinberger, O.D. & Associates begin by reviewing your medical history, performing a complete eye examination, and discussing your symptoms. To make a thorough diagnosis, you may need one or more of the following tests, including:

  • Visual acuity test – A vision test measuring how well you can read a series of letters
  • Retinal exam – Your eyes are dilated to check for signs of cataracts
  • Digital slit lamp imaging – Technology that captures high-quality contrast images of your eye

The goal of the optometrists at Dr. Dean S. Steinberger, O.D. & Associates is to thoroughly assess your condition to determine the right course of treatment for you.

How are cataracts treated?

Cataracts are typically removed in a short outpatient procedure. The procedure involves replacing your clouded lens with a clear artificial lens.

Not everyone needs surgery. But, if cataracts are interfering with your ability to read, drive at night, or perform day-to-day activities, cataract surgery can help restore your quality of life.

The team at Dr. Dean S. Steinberger, O.D. & Associates will walk you through the benefits, risks, available options, and preparation and recovery time for cataract surgery. They take time to answer all of your questions and can quickly connect you with the top doctors performing cataract surgery to ensure you receive the treatment you need.
